“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Genesis 1:27, 31

Hello Reader,

Growing up in certain Christian spaces, we were inculcated with the suspicion of desires. And all forms of desires were taught to be quenched or resisted.

However, if we look carefully, the Bible does not contend with desire but fights against unruly desires, desires out of bounds and control.

As humans, the needs to want, to love, to long, and to hunger were instilled in us before the Fall.
In Genesis, Adam sees Eve and bursts into poetry. "Bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh."

The first attraction is celebrated
The first wedding happens before the first sin.
The first desire is honoured as what God called very good.

Male and female, He made them.
And He called it very good.

However, somewhere along the way, we started treating desire as an inherently suspect attraction, like always one step from sin.

But that's not the Genesis story. God looked at creation—at bodies, at attraction, at the capacity to desire another person—and called it very good.

Desire is supposed to draw us toward a higher purpose, shared value, and building life together, mirroring the creative love of God himself.

At the right function, desire is not just a biological urge to be fulfilled but also calls for a higher purpose and meaning.

This is not a licence to say or mean that desire has no boundaries. However, our goal is to head towards the proper order, understanding, reflecting and controlling our desires.

Be Determined. Stay Focused.
Ekerete Lord-kris.

  2. What would change if you treated your desires as things to be stewarded rather than things to be suppressed?

Deeper Dive:
